ED DRAKE & PAM THORBURN GRAB GOLD IN TIGNES
The BRITS 2015 kicked off in incredible style as Ed Drake tore through the competition to make three-peat history, whilst Pam Thorburn picked up the women’s crown under blue skies at the British Skiercross championships.
A scorcher of a day in Tignes, France was the perfect backdrop for a day of nail-biting racing action, with skiers of all ages taking to the freshly shaped cross course. Skiers first flew down the course to set their fastest qualifying times, before the 4×4 races began to separate the fast, from the true skiercross royalty!
In the overall men’s category one man stood head and shoulders above the rest yet again. Ed Drake only needed one of his runs to put himself more than a second ahead in qualification, before a flawless run through the 4×4 races saw him take home the gold medal for the third year and the historic three-peat. Sam Gerrett, for the second year in a row, was just short of Drake all day. Although he couldn’t quite match the man in front, he still put in a stellar performance to convert his great qualifying pace into a 2nd silver medal in 2 years. Sam Allen proved that he was capable of stepping up his game throughout the day to close out the podium. Moving up from 6th in qualifying, to 3rd overall, Allen proved that you need more than raw speed to succeed in the head to head combat of cross racing.
Stoked on his third BRITS title, Drake commented: “it was a good, fun competition. We had a few more guys here than last year so it’s great that it’s always growing. The course held up really well, especially with how warm it was. Next year, it would be great if it was bigger!”
